What are TMS Therapy Success Rates?
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a relatively new treatment method that’s received a lot of attention in recent years. Used for treating treatment-resistant depression and other mental health disorders, it is continually being studied via clinical trials in the U.S. and abroad.
But does TMS therapy work?
When it comes to your health, whether physical or mental, no one should proceed with medical treatment unless there is a body of research supporting its safety and efficacy. TMS is a relatively new entry into the clinical realm and is continually being studied via clinical trials in the U.S. and abroad.
Up to 50% of patients who seek treatment for depression find that they don’t respond to antidepressants or, worse, suffer from acute side effects from antidepressants.
For these people, TMS offers new hope for relief from the symptoms of depression.
TMS Therapy: A Cutting-Edge Alternative
Cleared in 2008 by the FDA for treating major depressive disorder (MDD), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive treatment that does not require anesthesia or recovery time.
TMS therapy uses an electromagnetic coil strategically placed on the scalp that generates repetitive magnetic pulses. These pulses are targeted to areas of the brain that help govern mood. This stimulates dormant brain cells in the limbic region, strengthening connections between brain cells, which results in:
- Improved concentration
- Better sleep quality
- Improved symptoms of depression and anxiety
Studies have shown that there has been a significant success rate, with over one million TMS therapy treatments performed since 2008.
PHQ-9 Depression Screening
Anew Era TMS & Psychiatry offers an online version of the commonly used Depression Screening tool called the PHQ-9. The nine items of the PHQ-9 are based directly on the nine diagnostic criteria for major depressive disorder in the DSM-IV.
Does TMS Work? What Studies Say
Yes, TMS therapy works, and it’s backed up by multiple studies.
TMS therapy has been studied extensively worldwide, resulting in an abundance of clinical trial results that support its continued success in treating major depressive disorder (MDD) and other conditions with few, if any, adverse effects.
Some of the many studies include:
A randomized sham-controlled study with 212 participants in which the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS) was used to assess depression rates before and after a four-week TMS treatment period and a following 12-week maintenance phase. Based on the change in the HDRS results, findings showed that the patients who received TMS had clearly higher response and remission rates than the sham treatments.
A multi-site observational study involving 42 TMS providers where 307 patients with treatment-resistant depression received up to 6 weeks of TMS therapy. Patient responses were recorded from baseline to the end of the acute phase. The outcomes indicated statistically significant improvement in response and remission rates after receiving TMS.
A study found that TMS therapy is also effective when treating generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), nearly 6 percent of Americans deal with the symptoms of GAD at least once during their lives. Meanwhile, the Anxiety & Depression Association of America says only one in four Americans receive treatment.
How Successful is TMS Therapy?
TMS therapy is safe and effective, and research seems to show it’s fairly successful. According to Harvard Health, up to 60% of people who don’t respond to antidepressants have a “clinically meaningful response” to TMS therapy, with a full third experiencing a full remission of their symptoms.

Why Should I Choose TMS Therapy?
TMS therapy is an ideal choice for many. It can improve your mood, make your symptoms easier to manage, and can be worked into the busiest of schedules.
Here are a few reasons why you should consider receiving TMS therapy:
TMS Therapy Can Work When Traditional Treatment Doesn’t
Studies have shown that TMS can have results for people who haven’t responded to more traditional forms of treatment like antidepressants.
TMS Has Limited Side Effects
TMS has minimal side effects with long-lasting results. While some people report minimal side effects like headaches or tingling sensations on their scalp, these side effects generally fade with time.
TMS Is Flexible
TMS therapy is always offered on an outpatient basis, giving you the flexible options you need for a busy schedule. This effective form of therapy usually runs for 5-7 weeks, with 20 to 30-minute sessions five days per week.
TMS Doesn’t Use Anesthesia
You’ll be fully alert during your TMS therapy procedure, and because TMS is noninvasive and doesn’t require anesthesia, you can easily return to normal daily activities following your treatment. There’s no downtime.
TMS Is FDA-Cleared
TMS therapy has been cleared by the FDA for treating major depressive disorder and other conditions.
